5 Easy Ways To Embrace Mindful Eating

Embrace mindful eating with this Buddhist teaching that helps you reconnect to Mother Earth and get more enjoyment from your food

Take your time

When you sit down to dinner, remember that it’s not a race! Enjoy your meal mouthful by mouthful, and converse with others around you at the dinner table. Finish each mouthful before putting more food in. Be mindful – chew slowly and savour the flavour of each bite. You’ll be surprised how many more delicious flavours and ingredients you’ll pick up on. Eating with chopsticks or small cutlery is also a great way to slow down.

Savour the silence

No time to meditate? Turn your evening meal into your quiet time for mindfully reflecting. If you have a family and mealtimes often involve conversation, then take time during the day to eat your lunch or a snack on your own. Focus on being calm and composed while enjoying your food, and reflect on your day and the things that matter to you.

Turn off distractions

Hide your mobile and stay away from the television. Eat with friends or family and make it a social occasion. Food should be fun and a chance to relax – don’t get bogged down with work, social media or electronic distractions that may limit interaction between you and those you love.

Pay attention to flavour

Enjoy the refreshing zest of a lemon, the spiciness of a delicious curry or the crunch of a crusty slice of bread. Paying attention to the details of your food can be a great way to start eating mindfully. Explore the different sensations of eating it. Consider textures and ingredients. Give thanks for Mother Nature and the variety on your plate.

Know your food

Rekindle your mindful relationship with food. Get involved with what is on your plate – grow herbs and vegetables, visit a farmer’s market, or make your own bread. Connect with the story behind your food. Even if you have no idea where the food you are eating has come from, try asking yourself some questions about it. Who grew it? How? Which country did it come from? How did it get from there to your plate?
